Remember BeGone on nPlay? Its servers closed in 2022 and it can no longer be played. Turf War: Taipei (角頭械鬥) is a free multiplayer shooter for the browser whose rules are an homage to BeGone: SWAT vs Militia, round-based Elimination and Sabotage, one life a round, and guns and attachments bought in your base at the start of each round. It opens in a plain browser, with no plugin to install.

What was BeGone?

According to its community wikis (BeGone Wiki, NamuWiki), BeGone was a 3D browser-based multiplayer shooter developed by ProtonStudios and released on 11 September 2010. It was free to play on nplay.com, logged in or as a guest. It ran on Unity, so players had to install the Unity Web Player plugin to play it in the browser. The wikis list its room sizes as Duel, Team Duel, Mini, Medium, Large and Mega.

Is BeGone still playable?

No. According to NamuWiki, BeGone's servers were temporarily closed on 14 April 2022 and deleted on 9 May 2022, and the game cannot be played since; mainstream browsers had long stopped supporting plugins such as the Unity Web Player anyway.

If what you miss is the way it played (one life a round, pressing B in your base to buy, saving up for an M4A1 with an ACOG, Militia sneaking onto a site to arm the bomb), Turf War: Taipei was rebuilt around those rules, and there is nothing to install this time.

What Turf War: Taipei keeps from BeGone

The rules, the economy and the weapon numbers follow BeGone as closely as we could; BeGone's maps were rebuilt from their top-down layouts with our own geometry and textures. The BeGone column follows its community wikis.

FeatureBeGoneTurf War: Taipei

Prices, damage, fire rates, magazines and reload times are BeGone's numbers as they were; accuracy, recoil and zoom go through one fixed conversion into the new engine, so the feel is close but not identical (the shotgun's spread is tighter, for one, and fall damage is half of BeGone's).

What is new

Start in 30 seconds

  1. Open turfwar.ianhsiao.me, pick a callsign and a side (SWAT, Militia or automatic).
  2. To jump straight in, press Quick play: it joins the fullest open public room, or opens a 6v6 with bots.
  3. To get your aim back first, Solo vs bots needs no connection and has a bot difficulty setting, and the Practice range has a free store with every gun and attachment.
  4. To meet old squadmates, Create room, make it private and share its 4-letter room code.
  5. In a round's first 20 s, press B in your base to buy, just like before.

FAQ

Is it free? Do I have to download anything?

It is free and has no ads. There is nothing to download, no account to create and no plugin such as the Unity Web Player to install: open turfwar.ianhsiao.me in an ordinary browser and play.

Can I play BeGone's maps?

You can play rebuilt versions. Warehouse, Pipeline and Timbertown were rebuilt from BeGone's top-down layouts, with the ladders where they were, but the buildings and textures are this project's own, not the original files. Crane, Tower and Courtyard were rebuilt too and are retired for now.

Are the weapon stats the same as BeGone's?

Mostly. The knife, MP5, M4A1, M1014, M110, M249, M9A1, MP7, M67 grenade and every attachment keep BeGone's prices, damage, fire rates and magazines, and the cash awards are the same. Accuracy, recoil and zoom go through one fixed conversion into the new engine, so the feel is close but not identical.

Does it run on phones?

Yes. Phones and tablets get on-screen touch controls (a floating stick, a look pad and buttons, with an editable layout), and the game can be installed as a web app. Hold the phone sideways.

Is BeGone still online?

No. According to NamuWiki, BeGone's servers were temporarily closed on 14 April 2022 and deleted on 9 May 2022, and it cannot be played since.
