How to play

  1. Open the game at turfwar.ianhsiao.me, pick a callsign and a side (SWAT, Militia or automatic).
  2. Choose a way in. Quick play joins the fullest open public room, or opens a 6v6 with bots. Create room sets the mode, size, map and public or private (a 4-letter code). Join room lists every live room with its ping. Solo vs bots needs no connection, and the Practice range has a free store.
  3. Buy weapons. Each round starts with a 4 s freeze, and for the first 20 s you can buy guns with B inside your own base, and anywhere once the round is over (attachments, grenades, smoke, molotovs and bubble tea any time). A new match starts with $1,000, an MP5 and an M9A1.
  4. Win rounds. You have one life per round and respawn at the next one (while dead you watch your killer). The first team to 10 round wins takes the match (6 in public online rooms, so a match fits in one sitting).
  5. Earn cash and upgrade. Kills, headshots, assists, arming or disarming the bomb and winning rounds pay out; weapons and attachments last the whole match.

Game modes

Elimination

120-second rounds. Kill the whole other team to win the round. If time runs out with both teams alive the round is a draw: it is replayed and nobody scores.

Sabotage

Militia attacks and SWAT defends. Militia holds E for 5 seconds at site A or B to arm the bomb (no moving or shooting while arming); the clock drops to 40 seconds and the other site goes inert. From then on SWAT can only win by disarming the bomb (E for 5 seconds), and if the bomb goes off Militia win. Before the bomb is armed, all SWAT dead means a Militia win, and all Militia dead or time out means a SWAT win; there are no draws. Rounds are 90 seconds (120 on single-site maps).

FAQ

Can I play it on a phone?

Yes. Phones and tablets get on-screen touch controls (a floating stick, a look pad and buttons, with an editable layout) and the game can be installed as a web app. Hold the phone sideways. In-app browsers such as Threads and Instagram never rotate to landscape, so the game turns the page 90 degrees for you to turn the phone; on Android you can open it in Chrome instead.

Can I play alone, or with friends?

Yes to both. Solo vs bots needs no connection and the practice range lets you try every weapon for free. To play with friends, start a private room and share its 4-letter code; after a match you can also send a 1v1 challenge link.

Can my class play it together in the computer lab?

Yes. Turf War: Taipei is a browser based game with nothing to download and no account: open turfwar.ianhsiao.me on the school computers. One student starts a private room and shares its 4-letter code: a 6v6 room holds 12 players, a 24v24 room 48. On slower computers, set Graphics to Low in Settings.

How is it related to BeGone?

Turf War: Taipei is an homage to BeGone, nPlay's browser shooter: it follows its rules and its weapon and attachment numbers. Every model, texture and sound is original or CC0 / OFL licensed; no BeGone assets are used.

Is Turf War: Taipei open source?

Yes. The code is MIT-licensed on GitHub (github.com/madeyexz/turfwar) and third-party assets keep their own licences (CC0, SIL OFL). The names 角頭械鬥 and Turf War: Taipei and the logo are not licensed for reuse; forks are welcome under a different name.

Which languages does it support?

English and Traditional Chinese (繁體中文), switchable at any time in the settings. It follows your browser's language by default, and ?lang=en or ?lang=zh-TW in the address picks one for a visit.
